101 CMS Vancouver II

Post  vampyre on Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:38 am

100a: CMS “Vancouver II”

“Arcadia exists on the NE coast of the United States, near the border to our Canadian Federation and is surrounded by impenetrable mountains on 3 sides and the sea. You will find little difference in lifestyle and culture as you all have lived within the Princedom of Quebec and Arcadia is no different as you will learn with the Syntex. However, the Princedom has been isolated from the outside world, but that has not affected the day to day lives of its citizens. Take for instance the media. It is provided by satellite, consisting of TV entertainment shows, documentaries and lifestyle channels, but current events and local shows is provided by 3 local cable TV stations. Indeed one recent documentary from Discovery Channel proclaimed New Providence as one of the top 10 cities in the world.”

“So who are the other 9 cities?” a young girl asked.

“Let me see…” the briefing officer referred to his notes. “Tokyo topped the list, followed by Rome, Marseilles, Barcelona, Los Angeles, New Providence, Melbourne, London, Montreal and New York.”

There were some smiles and laughter among the audience in the room. The girl’s parents among them, good naturedly and she did join in realizing just how silly the question had been.

The briefing officer continued. “As newly settled citizens from the Canadian Federation, you must be very mindful in your responsibilities. So before we continue, we shall begin the indoctrination program using your developed Syntex Infusion device. We all know just how important this is in the settlement process.” He looked at the 53 new citizens, consisting of 10 families and 6 single men and women…all successful candidates “We will arrive in New Providence in 4 days and this must be completed before we reach the mist.”

Captains Log: Vancouver II: 21 May, 1750EST

“We have successfully passed through the mist. I sigh with relief each time I see the coastal escort patrols waiting for us 2 miles beyond the mist. However it is evening, which means we have special cargo on board and once that is offloaded I will be able to relax. Mr Castle who has traveled on 4 previous night arrivals to the Princedom has once again sung the usual tune, military equipment for the Protectorate in the sealed cargo doors, but I still cannot feel but unsettled by this. Military equipment for the Protectorate Defense Force has been offloaded during the day in the past and in public view…the change now is disconcerting and felt likewise by the crew. So this evening once docked I will be entertaining the new settlers as they must remain on board until morning. A number of guests and dignitaries from New Providence will be in attendance.” The captain completed the entry, not willing to write anything further. As it was, he may have gone too far, but for him and two other officers, they would soon be in PDF protection. The culmination of a year of negotiation and secretly sending their families to the Princedom, for himself and two of his closest officers, this voyage would be their last.

102 Vancouver II

Post  vampyre on Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:42 am

101a: CMS “Vancouver II”

“Welcome.” The voice intoned as the man entered the chamber. Dressed in a black suit the man looked around for a moment, his face expressionless before sitting down before a wooden table. The bulkhead groaned as both felt the vessel changing course. The man looked up and smiled, the skin of his face pale in complexion. Mr Castle regarded the man with genuine fear, perspiration forming on his forehead. Gathering his breath he spoke. “You have been briefed on your assignment. I will provide the necessary support to ensure you blend in without drawing attention. On the table is a number of files you are to read once you have been taken to your haven. These files detail what you need to know about the university and this Princedom. The briefcase contains your identification, credit cards, bank account details and records of your previous employment history in the Canadian Federation. Your passport recently stamped by customs is also enclosed.”

Mr Castle watched as the man perused each of the folders then opened the briefcase, placed the files within and closed it with a click. “The ship will dock in less than 1 hour.”

“Are you sure Mr Castle that your information is accurate concerning what is…just a possible target. I would not like to think that your imagination is getting the better of you.”

Mr Castle froze for a moment and his heart beat raced…something noticed by the man and he smiled broadly. “I can assure you ….that I would not have brought you here if there was not a possibility of a sleeper.”

“The last of them perished before the end of the last century.” The man said. “I find a sleeper here…and now…unusual.”

“I must admit it took some convincing among your Prince’s inner council. And it is your Prince that I work for and have done loyally this past 18 years. I would not have ever brought this to his attention unless situations were taking place that may constitute a sleeper and awakening thereof.”

The man nodded. “I have been instructed to take your concerns seriously Mr Castle and that I will do.”

103 Pier 7

Post  vampyre on Tue Jul 28, 2009 9:33 am

102: Pier 7: 21 May

The “Vancouver II” had docked 3 hours earlier and as expected once docking was complete the dockyard workers left, glad to get home for the evening. The night was cool and rain was falling, expected to last the two hours. The pier was separated by a 450ft long warehouse where much of the cargo would be stored over the next few days. The pier on which the warehouse was built, were lit by tall lamps, spaced every 40 feet. The cargo ship was also lit by its own outside lighting illuminating 3 gantry cranes, 3 levels of containers on the decks and the 7 storey aft deck. The observer glanced towards the city, the tall skyscrapers of the central business district dominating the skyline, brightly lit in the gloomy wet evening. The observer shivered, rain dripping from his hat and black overcoat as he waited patiently.

Towards midnight a convoy of vehicles, led by 3 Hum Vees moved along the pier below the warehouse, no headlights on, the vehicles very silent. Following the Hum Vees were 15 black reinforced vans, similar to those used by security companies, UPS and Securicor to transfer large sums of money between businesses and banks. Armed guards dressed in black, with vests and full visor helmets stepped out and quickly secured the area. Four climbed the siding of the warehouse and positioned themselves on the roof, one just 30 feet from the observer who smiled unseen to the mercenary soldiers.

Four climbed the gangplank and disappeared below deck and soon part of the bulkhead, forward of the ship opened and landed on the dock. Then the transfer began, each security van parking before the landing and large solid wooden boxes transferred. The observer noted the number of boxes:

3 for vehicle 1
4 for vehicle 2
2 for vehicle 3
4 for vehicle 4
4 for vehicle 5
3 for vehicle 6
3 for vehicle 7
6 for vehicle 8
2 for vehicle 9
3 for vehicle l0
2 for vehicle 11

As each vehicle was loaded and secured the driver parked allowing the next until a line of 11 vehicles escorted by 2 Hum Vees left the dock, only activating their lights as they approached the security gates. The remaining 4 vehicles were loaded with smaller boxes then the bulkhead was secured and quietly the 4 guards on the roof climbed down and within minutes the remaining vehicles had left the pier. The observer heard laughter on the deck of the ship as a couple of guests came out sipping wine and somewhat drunk. Once again things had gone smoothly and the observer watched the guests for a moment then turned to make his own exit from the pier. Before resting for the evening he had to report.

104 Arcadia University

Post  vampyre on Wed Jul 29, 2009 6:54 am

103a: Arcadia University: 22 May

The car crossed the suspension bridge separating the brightly lit landscape of New Providence’s central business district and Arcadia Isle, home of the university. It had been 18 minutes since the observer had left Pier 7 and as expected the security vans observed had melted in the busy Friday night traffic in the city. It was so easy to do…and they knew how to conceal their movements very well. Once cross the bridge he entered the university that covered the entire island. To the left were the campus grounds where colonial styled fraternity and sorority houses lay in a park like setting, surrounding E Street, where nightclubs, bars, taverns and restaurants catered for the students and visitors who flocked in from the city. There were also cafes, retail stores and theatres. E Street was all very well designed to cater for the needs of the campus students…and other more unwelcome visitors and there was still friendly banter between students as to the origin of E Street. Was E named after the Entertainment Channel or named after Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band…I like the latter more. The rain continued to fall outside but that would not stop the students from enjoying a night of partying at the clubs and bars.

To the right was Winchester House, a gothic styled structure that was the university’s administration center and behind it rose the modern science labs and lecture buildings. Moving along the main avenue the car passed a row of offices, lecture rooms and small libraries and turning left into Galveston Ave the driver headed towards one of the oldest buildings on the island, St Magdalene. Located on the SE corner of the isle, St Magdalene started out as a mystery school and became along with the priory, a sanctuary for Templars escaping the persecution following Black Friday 1307. It was not until the early 19th century after considerable expansion and rebuilding that the esoteric library became the centre for a new school that became a university in 1888. St Magdalene was the repository and library of religious, esoteric and theological studies and few knew just how extensive the library was. Even fewer knew that like the Vatican Library, St Magdalene had its own secret archives and the guardian of those archives the driver was about to meet.

He approached the building, a large cathedral designed structure that was surrounded by gardens, popular with students meeting between lectures as the south end of E Street met the edge of the gardens. Often students would get lunch at the cafes and sit at the benches in the gardens, especially during summer. There was a tranquil atmosphere to this place…even now just past 1am. Parking before the massive structure the observer stepped out and secured the door activating the alarm and looking around for a moment climbed the stone steps between roman styled pillars and entered through large cedar wooden doors. The doors opened into a antechamber and passing through an archway he entered the ground floor which was administration, cataloguing and reception, where up to 20 staff attended to students signing out, order picking up books that they had ordered and of signing books back in. It was all quiet and dimly lit by lights descended by the tall ceiling by chains. Doors to the right and end of the circular shaped room led to library galleries and between two such doors stairs led to one of 4 balcony styled levels above, each with galleries of libraries that spanned out, the balconies themselves becoming study alcoves with the latest in computer and intranet access. At the top was a dome shaped ceiling, carved with esoteric and symbology of the feminine. All lost of the students who visited here. The floor was tiled in white marble but there was a design in black marble that from the balcony levels was a stretched M within the Egyptian all seeing eye, representing Isis. “Some called her Isis, the Queen of all things beneficial, Queen of Heaven and mother of salvation. Others called her Magdalene, she who was initiated, the one with the balm, shared of spirit, shared in the mysteries.” Just one of many pieces of the mystery that rather tame lodges had lost centuries ago. But there were those who knew such secrets, guarded them well and revered them with the respect they were due…I among them.

There were lifts to the upper floors but the observer took the stairs and entering the second level took a corridor between aisles of shelves to an office door. He was about to knock when he heard movement and turning saw a gentleman approaching from the coffee room sipping a latte and looking at a document. “Professor.” The observer greeted smiling knowing the man would probably bump into him, so concentrated he was.

The Professor looked up, his shoulder length hair untidy as usual, glasses low down on his nose. He was dressed casually and the observer knew that he literally lived here in the library, having private rooms behind his office. “Ah…Witherspoon, so good to see you. I hope everything went well…come inside. I have your favourite brandy waiting for you.”

They both entered and the Professor closed the door behind. Activating a strange signet beside the door, not only secured it, but also provided other protections needed for such conversation. The office was to say the least an example of organized chaos, untidy with shelves of bulging documents and on his desk more documents piled in disorganized stacks. There were two computers, which the Professor used only when necessary, he loved recording the written word….it lasted longer he said once. Behind the desk the wall was paneled in varnished elm and there was an armoured statue of a Knight Templar, holding the pommel of a sword that faced down to the floor. It was the statue that was the door to the Professor’s private apartment.

On a table against one wall, below the shelving, was a decanter of brandy and the observer poured a glass, taking a deep sip. The Professor sat down and took notes as the observer reported on what he had seen at Pier 7. After the report, Witherspoon sat down and waited, while the Professor became deep in thought. “This is the largest movement this year and will bring their number to…42…that we know of.”
“There was no identification. The transport was provided by the usual source and they of course are neutral, only after money.”
The Professor nodded. “This could mean they are becoming more careful in their activities, especially from their own kind. But this also could be a new coterie, with no affiliations to those already here.”
“When are we going to move against them?”
The Professor leaned back on his chair. “I wish we could. Their greatest weakness, in respect to there shall we say…humanity, is there need to be with humanity. So they are going to surface and unfortunately so must we. Witherspoon I think we need to prepare adequately for what may lay ahead. You and Norrell must go to Northbeach to the house I have prepared. Norrell has files on those you must observe.”

Witherspoon nodded and finished his brandy. Topping his glass, he sat back down and conversed with his friend, never mentioning again, the subject of their meeting.

105 Arcadia University

Post  vampyre on Wed Jul 29, 2009 7:56 am

104a: Arcadia University: 27 May

“Hey did you hear about the incident at the Isis, last night. God…who the fuck would be so crazy to get involved in that?”
Gabriel Markham picked up his books from the bench and placed them in his bag. “There are some real weirdoes out there, Jacob. I have always thought that club was trouble and should not be part of the E street scene.”
Jacob Dennison “Yeah I know…my girlfriend was planning on going their last night. Something about a party text bomb she received from Nicola.”
Gabriel looked at his friend with a concerned expression. “Really…I would be wary of Nicola. I do not trust her.”
They began to walk towards Tenniston House, one of the main lecture halls, opposite the gardens before St Magdalene. “I am trying my best Gabriel…but Nicola is just so persuasive. She is well…into wild stuff been a goth and that, so is Tanya.”
Gabriel nodded and they climbed the steps. “There are a couple of more respectable clubs in the city where the goth scene is prevalent and where the more extreme facets are not tolerated. Perhaps you might want to take her their, I think Professor McDowell might know more about them. He has had to research them recently as part of the modernism of medieval traditions.”
“Ah…modernism….what…well if he has been there, I will see him.” Jacob returned. “Anything to get Tanya away from Nicola.”

As they moved across the avenue, Witherspoon, dressed casually, watched from the gardens while sipping a latte. Other students enjoying the bright sunshine moved past him as they walked to the next set of classes. One of the students recognized him. “Hiya coach.” She said smiling. “We will be practicing tonight but will be inside. We don’t want to distract the team too much.” She giggled.
“Of course Cassandra.” He returned politely recognizing her as one of the cheerleaders. “It is going to be a cold evening for practice.”
She smiled and joined her friends chatting away about whatever girls there age talk about. Undoubtedly boys and having fun…some things had to be maintained, traditions…including the university NFL team.

106 North Beach

Post  vampyre on Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:43 am

105a: North Beach: Evening: 27 May

It was 9.30pm when Witherspoon and Norrell returned to their apt at North Beach. It was in this suburb that Jacob Dennison lived with his family on 253 Beach Front Drive close to 1 other who also lived with their family...all students at the university. Once inside, Norrell made coffee and French croissants and in the lounge Witherspoon informed Norrell of the conversation he heard earlier in the day. “Jacob’s girlfriend is Tanya Corrigan, majoring in theology and an accomplished gymnast. She is a freshman at Kappa Phi sorority.”
Jenna Norrell nodded. “Yes I have seen her…she is very good. Little is known about this Nicola tanya is drawn too. Nicola seems to run the Isis club, especially on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and made her presence known 3 months ago. Do you think she may have been among the 3rd group to arrive from the Canadian Federation.”
“I think so and her influence, especially over girls, seems to indicate her possible affiliation. Since she has been on the scene there, the club has certainly changed from its original concept, become considerably darker with the gothic and mild S&M stage shows now been shown.”
“Tanya is not a goth.” Norrell remarked lighting a San Remo slimline cigar. “The only thing she has done is dyed her hair black, wears black latex outfits and tries to fit in with the goth community at the university, wanting to fit in. Enter Nicola…there to help her fit in, but in Nicola’s own way and to her own end.”
Weatherspoon nodded in agreement. “Tanya is innocent enough and therefore wanting to fit in…is a weakness that Nicola can exploit. I am thinking that she may not be a vampire but more of an succubus, feeding of the weakness of others and in Nicola’s case, perhaps enslaving her victims into her own perverse world. The incident the other evening has not been explained. 3 girls go missing after a party goes out of control. NPPD are still investigating and the club has been allowed to continue to trade. I think it is important that we do something about this, Jacob has been speaking to our 5th and so has Tanya. They had lunch at the Diva Café just yesterday. I will get you to talk with Tanya…girls tend to talk more freely and as the coach, it would be out of synch for me to intervene on this.”
Norrell nodded. “And you?”
“I will keep watch on Jacob. He has an advantage, the 3rd of the 5, Gabriel, has been in the picture for a while now and is showing great promise. He has a strong will and sense of morality. He is also beginning to exhibit gifts that the Professor has confirmed as seeing. Since Jacob and Tanya are the only 2 of the 4 who have met with the 5th, we need to ensure that that relationship remains stable and is not turned upside down by Nicola.”

107 Buena Vista Boulevard

Post  vampyre on Thu Jul 30, 2009 8:20 am

106a: Buena Vista Boulevard: North Beach: Evening: 28 May

The police car moved slowly along the boulevard. It was the early hours of the morning and this area had been the focus of a number of disappearances recently. Things had been quiet the past four days, since the last missing person report, 17-yr-old Carol Linkman, daughter of the renowned Swiss watch maker, Karl Linkman. Carol was the fourth victim in the past two weeks, all female, all from renowned and respected families. “Denny’s is closing in 30 minutes.” Sgt Mike Ramsfield remarked looking at his watch. “What do you say for a meal to see the night through. Better than the sandwiches I got from the wife tonight.”
“Another domestic Mike.” His partner, Sean Corrigan remarked musingly. “When you get something you can’t microwave, it is usually the case.”
“Yeah…putting the daughter through college discussion again. We have delayed it once already and the next semester starts in two weeks. Got 5 days to put the application through. It is getting expensive these days.”
“Tell me about it, I have two in college already, my youngest Tanya just started this year. Come on let’s grab a feed, my shout.”
“Can’t resist that.” Mike grinned spurring the car forward.

1214 Buena Vista Boulevard: 1.34am

The police car passed by and a figure within the home watched then closed the curtains. Turning he watched his friends gorge on the bloodied bodies of Mr and Mrs Jansen. The walls and floor was splattered with blood after a frenzied orgy of feeding as the couple died at the hands of the watcher’s two new progeny.
“Janak, there is a window open upstairs.” A voice said from the top of the stairs.
“I thought they were alone.” Janak replied angrily. “Find Tullock. I want an explanation for this.”
The person at the top of the stairs disappeared quickly into a corridor and Janak turned to eye his two progeny, sucking the vitae from the dead like wolves feeding from their prey…the warmth and vitality of the blood fuelling him. He joined in the feasting…the smell and intoxicating fervour of the scene enhancing the highs from the drugs he took earlier in the evening.

Outside 1236 Buena Vista Boulevard: 1.38am

“Who is on this evening?” Norrell asks as the police car drives past them.
“Ramsfield and Corrigan…Tanya’s father.” Witherspoon replied looking across the street. “Ah…the study light has gone out. Looks like the evening is done.”
“Did you know another text bomb was sent out tonight by Nicola.”
Witherspoon nodded. “Jacob got into a panic and contacted Gabriel. If Jacob had taken Gabriel’s advice…well he did not. Tanya was all set to go, seemingly in some sought of surreal trance state, Jacob tried to stop her…a fight broke out and Gabriel came in and had to force the pill down her throat. She has been in a deep coma for the past 2 hours.”
“What did Gabriel give her?” Norrell asked lighting a cigar slimline.
“Sorelco…a heavy sedative.” Witherspoon replied. “Problem is she is still at the sorority…but Jacob and Gabriel are with her. Thank god most of the girls are out partying tonight. A new nightclub has opened on E Street.”
“Oh what is it this time?”
“1930’s in style…film noir that sort of think. I think it is called New York, New York.”

Suddenly the vehicle moved as something thumped at the back. Norrell leapt outside dropping her cigarette and a girl ran into her, wearing white night clothes ripped and torn, her body shivering…she was crying and trying to say something but could not speak.
“Get her in the back Norrell.” Witherspoon ordered.
Norrell nodded and opened the back door and covering the girl’s mouth got her inside as Witherspoon leaned across and closed the front passenger door, Norrell had left open. Once inside, Norrell closed the door shut and Witherspoon locked the car and activated the tinting of the windows. Norrell released her grip over the girls mouth. “Stay quiet…stay still.” She said using a simple mental technique to calm the girl down and it began to work. Norrell looked at Witherspoon. “What do we do?”
“We wait and make arrangements.” He reached for his cellphone and made a call. “Dr Carson…Witherspoon here, sorry to disturb you tonight, but we have a Sierra situation unfolding…we will need you to meet us at the clinic.”
“Of all the nights…I should be able to get myself away from the party.” Came the reply. “My wife’s friends are overbearing at best…I will be there in 10 minutes.”
“Acknowledged.” Closing the cellphone he looked up through the window and saw two figures flying overhead, slowly….stopping and looking around, sniffing the air. “They are looking for her scent…her smell.”
“Who?” Norrell replied. She could not see them from the back seat.”
“Vampires.” Witherspoon replied.

Then Norrell saw them…landing on the ground about 40 feet from their car. They were not the only car parked along the side of the boulevard. Oh damn…my cigarette…I dropped it outside. Vampires…this was just the second encounter she had experienced…and the closest. They started to look around, moving around the cars, keeping an eye on any traffic on the road, but there was none. Witherspoon made another call…emergency, calling police to a possible break in at 1233 Buena Vista. That should call Corrigan and Ramsfield.
“We can’t hand the girl over to them…without too many questions asked.”
“I know.” Witherspoon replied. “Use this.” He said handing Norrell a patch he retrieved from his pocket. “Place it on exposed skin…it will knock her out for an hour or so.”
Norrell nodded and did as he instructed.

The next two minutes were tense as the two vampires searched the street around where they landed moving towards their car and sniffing around it, trying to look in. They could see nothing...then they moved to the car behind them, one walking close to 1231, just behind their car. Then police sirens were heard and white and blue flickering lights announced the arrival of two police cars. The two vampires seeing the vehicles, bared their teeth in almost a challenge, but it was more out of frustration and anger. Then they melted into the darkness going into the property of 1231. The police car pulled up before Witherspoon and Norrell’s car and the police jumped out, the police radio with the usual chatter. As the officers raced to the door of the 1233, Witherspoon started the car and slowly pulled out, no lights on and moved slowly down the street, his eyes on the rear vision mirror. About 400 feet further down he activated low lights and increased the speed turning into Park Road, heading towards the clinic. That was too close…to close to the home of the 5th, 1236 Buena Vista.

108 28 May

Post  vampyre on Mon Aug 03, 2009 10:28 pm

107a: Tennyson Lane: New Salem: 2.05 am

Witherspoon drove into the town of New Salem, the main street quiet and lit by Victorian styled street lamps. The town was famous for its English look and feel, the main square surrounding a park of willows and elm trees. Passing the eerie and ghoulish Vincenza Wax Museum Dr Anthony Carson’s clinic was located in a side street behind a second hand furniture store owned by the doctor’s daughter. Entering a narrow lane a garage door opened up at the end and Witherspoon parked the car inside, the door closing automatically behind them.

The doctor emerged from a side door and helped Norrell carry the unconscious girl to a medical room where she was laid on a bed, Dr Carson and Norrell removed the girl’s nightgown and the doctor checked the girl immediately. “No puncture wounds….no wounds of any kind. The blood is not hers.”
“Sorry for disturbing the party.” Witherspoon returned.
“Not to worry…the wife is happy I have been called out. It was one of her evenings…and her evenings are where I am rather redundant.”
“Women…and gossip.” Norrel said smiling as she dressed the girl in a white robe.
“We need to find out who she is and where she lives?” Witherspoon informed. “We encountered her fleeing two vampires just outside the home of the 5th.” Witherspoon reported the encounter as the doctor took blood samples from the clothing on a table for analysis.
“The possible sleeper.” The doctor said looking up surprised. “I am not really a supporter of McDowell’s theory that a sleeper may exist. Not after all this time…a lot of people should have answered for what happened, but that was over 40 years ago.”
“And the world has moved on.” Witherspoon said quietly.
Doctor Carson nodded. “Yes…moved on indeed.” Once the samples had been taken the doctor then moved to the girl and placed a hand on her forehead and concentrated for a moment. Witherspoon and Norrell waited patiently. “Her name is Amanda Jansen….1214 Buena Vista….ahhh….to much distress and fear in her mind.” He removed the hand and breathed deeply. “There was one in her room…and had already fed, the blood on her clothing came from his mouth and hands. Then there was a disturbance downstairs…sounds…and this vampire left through the window. Hearing the sounds, shoutings and rough male voices, exultation…she fled through the window as heavy booted footsteps approached her room.” Doctor Carson was silent for a moment. “The victim is traumatized as one would expect…you will need to visit her home.”
Witherspoon nodded. “And if we encounter what we expect…you may have to look at the refuge for this girl.”
Dr Carson nodded. “Check the home first. I will keep our patient sedated…best for all of us.”
Witherspoon looked at Norrell. “Better change your clothes, you have blood over the suit.”

Buena Vista Boulevard: 2.28 am

“Too late.” Norrell observed as Witherspoon slowed the car passing 1222. Up ahead there were 3 police cars, lights flickering the night and a few bystanders were watching from the opposite side of the road…a crime scene at 1214.
Witherspoon nodded. “Giving the disappearances…residents are reporting anything suspicious to the police.” They were waved down by an officer who checked their driver’s licenses while asking their business. Norrell was looking to left and saw on the grass verge two officers taking pictures of tyre tracks on the grass, arcing like a vehicle has spun around…two wheeled…a motorbike. Nomads…a gang who roamed the princedom, causing trouble wherever they went. They appeared for only a few days of each month and no one knew that the gang was mostly vampires…and this was the first known time they had struck in the city…if it was them.
“Thank you sir.” The officer said to Witherspoon. “Continue on your way.”
“Certainly officer.” Witherspoon continued to drive slowly pass the 3 cars and saw an ambulance parked up the driveway. Norrell informed him of what she saw. “Nomads…they are the only vampires we have been able to truly identify. The Professor asked me late last year to search for their haven, following their visit in November. In the end I considered the effort fruitless…but the Professor seemed pleased, because it was not the finding that was important, it was eliminated the likely places we would expect.”
“Narrowing down the options.” Norrell said. “And if you find them…a bonus.”
Witherspoon nodded. “A bonus yes…if I had found it during the day.”

They passed by 1236…home of the 5th. No lights were on as with other houses this far from the crime scene. Their rented apt was the 4th of 6 at 16 Van Dien, just 5 blocks from 1236 Buena Vista, 4 blocks from Jacob Dennison’s parent’s home, at 40 Aspen Drive and 11 blocks from the apt of the 4th at 228 Clipper’s Drive.

“Nomads…Nicola.” Professor McDowell repeated as Witherspoon fell silent. Rubbing his eyes the professor rose, dressed in a elegant dressing gown and poured a glass of brandy. “Two active groups my friend. I would not be surprised if either were responsible for the missing girls in North Beach. The nomads are known to partake in such indulgences.”
“Amanda’s parents were found dead…brutally murdered and the police are looking for a psychopath.” Witherspoon continued. “They have released a press statement saying this crime is not linked to the disappearances in the area.”
Professor McDowell sipped his brandy and nodded. “I think it will not be long now.”
“Not be long….for what?”
“The sleeper to awaken.” The professor replied sitting back down behind his desk.
“And just how will that happen?” Witherspoon asked pensively. Just what happened when she did awaken…what role would Norrell and myself play in this?
“I do not know.” McDowell replied distantly.
Hmm…you do know I think, professor. But you are not willing to share it yet. “Then we watch and wait.”
“Yes. We cannot initiate this, my friend. Fate has to take its course, unfortunately. Whether we are coming full circle, or whether this is a new beginning I cannot say. There are no prophecies or predictions on the aftermath of what happened in the past.”
“But your organization obviously continued following the aftermath. There had to be a reason.”
“Survived…yes, but very splintered and over time more so. I have not communicated with anyone from the organization for over 20 years, since arriving here at New Providence.”
“So it may still exist in part outside the region…even the council?”
“Quite possibly, though the world has changed…moved on. They probably have normal lives and normal jobs.”
Witherspoon nodded. “Unlike yourself.” He said with a smile.
Professor McDowell smiled broadly. “My occupation is quite normal. It is just my other activities that others might find unusual.”

109a: Arcadia University: 3.56 am

After Witherspoon had left Professor McDowell retired to his private apt behind the Templar statue. As the statue opened out, the feet less that half an inch above the ground to prevent scarring on the varnished floor, was a solid paneled door that he opened using a circular stud attached to his belt. Passing through the statue closed as did the panel. Very few knew the existence of the apt located in what were a series of secret chambers used by the Watcher Council in the late 1800’s through to 1997. Over time the chambers were converted to a livable and functional apt. There were no windows and air was cycled through an air conditioning system that interfaced with original but unused air shafts. The apt was divided into a bedroom and bathroom ensuite, a kitchenette facing the lounge and two rooms where the secret archives retrieved from the ruins of 3 former Watcher compounds were stored. What was contained within the two rooms represented a past that was as dark and violent as it was unknown to the general populace of Arcadia. There were things best left secret to the world at large.

Making a cup of coffee he lit his pipe and sat down, the music of Beethoven softly in the background. How indeed my dear friend…how indeed. Even I do not know. The fifth of the five, the yet to be awakened slayer was Jennifer Moore adopted to her family shortly after birth. The only child to Malcolm and Deidre Moore, I knew Malcolm as he was an amateur astronomer and member of the New Providence Astronomy Society and worked as a Facilities Manager for the PDF at NS New Providence. Whatever happens I cannot…no one can initiate this, fate must play it course. I can only hope to be there when the awakening occurred…when her view of the world would change forever.

Arcadia University 7.30 am

“Tanya is waking up.” Jacob said jumping quickly to his feet.
Gabriel nodded suppressing a yawn. Outside the bright morning sun shone through the window and his eyes felt the effects of exhaustion. Though they had taken turns watching Tanya during the night…Gabriel had hardly slept at all. “Look…umm, times like this, threes a crowd. And I got two lectures this afternoon.”
Jacob nodded relieved that Tanya had awakened. “The tablet worked a treat Gabriel…thanks, we owe you one.”
“You owe nothing…this is what friends do, look out for each other. Next time do not be afraid to ask Professor McDowell and lets keep this to ourselves. I will leave you two love birds to it.” Gabriel finished with a tired smile and left the room and navigating his way through the sorority house without any problems, no one was up yet.

Dr Carson’s clinic: 1.50 pm

Professor McDowell listened as Dr Carson provided details of his medical investigation of Amanda Jansen. She was in the next room still sedated. The Police had been called to her home at 9.35am and radio and TV reports indicate that two people had been found brutally murdered…a psychopath possibly. Neighbours interviewed spoke highly of the Jansen family and yes…intimating concerns for their daughter, Amanda. Dr Carson had the TV tuned to ANN and pictures showed the residence with police vehicles and a curious crowd along the roadside. The ambulances containing the bodies of Sven and Doris Jansen had left 2 hours earlier. The media were already linking the disappearance of Amanda Jansen to the 4 missing girls from the North Beach area where she lived, Carol Linkman, Diane Cummings, Maria O’Flaherty and Vanessa Carlton, photos of them appearing on the screen. There was also a report on the 3 missing girls from the Isis Club on 24th May, still under investigation by the police, Lyn Whitaker, Cheryl McGuire and Danielle Wilson with pictures of them appearing on the screen as well. “The morning news has been non stop on this Michael.” Anthony informed with a sigh. “What do you want to do?”

“We have gained what we can from her encounter.” Professor McDowell replied musingly. “Deep hypnosis will help make her forget the incident…does she has any next of kin?”
Dr Carson nodded. “Yes, extended family here in New Providence.”
“The problem with this is those responsible for her parent’s murders may come after her…or the other vampire that was there…two incidents and both at the same location.”
“I don’t think she is a candidate for our help…she has more chance of remembering than those already there. We may have to take the risk of having her found.”
“And in the same clothing…what if forensics learns she had already undergone a medical examination…you would have left enough evidence.”
“There is that.” Dr Carson acknowledged. “What do you suggest then?”
Professor McDowell said quietly. “There is the priory.”
“What!!! They will not take her in.” Dr Carson replied in a raised voice. “Surely not…they live in total seclusion. That place is a virtual secret society…no one can get in there.”
“Not in complete seclusion…the priory is under the jurisdiction of the House of Lorraine and has taken in travelers in the past. The priory has both a male and female chapter of the order, totally separated from each other but sharing the same teaching and prayer areas. Such a place could help heal her over time.”
“And if through their contact with the House of Lorraine, she is identified?”
“Change of hair style and colour…slight alteration of facial features. You know someone that can do this.”
“This is…morally wrong Michael. She should be with family.”
“Do you not think I know that Anthony.” Professor McDowell replied. “There is a vampire out there whom she could possibly identify. He or she will not know what she may or may not remember. So she turns up again…the media will be all over it and the extended family she is reunited with. I do not want a repeat of these bloody deaths…I want her to survive…to live and I think the priory could be that place.”
“It seems to me you have some contact with them.”
“Very limited but yes I do.”

Dr Carson thought about it while sipping his coffee. “Must be lack of sleep or I am losing my mind. Next time Michael make sure of the ramifications of your actions…you will have to live with this.”
“No need to remind me my friend. When will she be ready?”
“Give me four days. I will need Norrell to be here.”
“I will arrange it.”

Cedar Park, New Providence 3.42 pm

“This place reminds me of Central Park in New York.” Norrell said as she opened the gate and passed through. Cedar Park lay in the centre of the CBD (Central Business District) of New Providence, the park expansive, tree lined with walkways, groves of trees and gardens, the park surrounded by 20-45 storey buildings on all sides and towards the harbour a second skyline of towering skyscrapers, more modern and some 90 storeys high loomed over the older buildings. “Peaceful tranquility among the rat race of life.”
Professor McDowell smiled before taking a bite from his hot dog. The mustard and relish had not changed all these years. “Have you and the doctor discussed the matter at hand?” he asked watching some children playing hand ball nearby.
“Yes.” Norrell replied sipping her bottle of coke. They had purchased lunch at a nearby hot dog stand, Norrell’s favourite. “You don’t mind if I say this goes against what I feel.”
“I would be concerned if you did not have feelings of morality…as with Anthony. Unfortunately those we face do not.”
They sat on a park bench, birds chirping in the cedar trees, from which the park was named. The children laughed and squealed as they got into the game watched over by teachers. A school class.
“And you really think she will be a target.” Norrell asked helping herself to the professor’s bag of French fries.
“Hmm….oh yes.” He said distractedly. “She will be a threat to one of their kind…compromise is something they do not want.”
“We are talking about the Nomads….they don’t really care about the mess they leave behind.”
“We must be thankful they do not roam that often.” The professor replied finishing his hot dog. Screwing the wrapper he placed it in the bin and wiped his mouth with a tissue. “The media are all over this Norrell. We have no option.”
“Speaking in the capacity of what I do…I agree. As a person…”
“She will be well looked after. And it will not be permanent…just a few months. Then a family in Tuscany will adopt her.”
“Oh…you have made such an arrangement so soon.” Norrell asked helping herself to the professors French fries, sitting between them.
“No. But the sisterhood will do so.” The professor replied. “If you like the fries, why did you not buy some?”
“I will do on the way back. What about the 5th?”
“Rhys will watch the residence over the next four nights. Gabriel will help too.”
“You are bringing him into this now?” Norrell asked surprised.
“He is more aware of the real world…I sense the awakening will be soon.”
“You sense it!” Norrell exclaimed surprised. “How can you…oh…why should I bother asking.” She sighed.
“French fries will make you feel better.” The professor said with a smile. “Call it circumstances…things are happening Norrell and never in such a concentration in both physical location and time.”
“You are right…the trigger you think?”
“Could be.”
“I will be glad when this is over. I could do with a rest…a vacation. Let the 5th take over.”
“It will not be that easy as you know.” The professor returned helping himself to his own French fries.
Norrell sighed. “I was hoping you would not say that.” she replied helping herself to the last of the French fries. “I owe you…come on.”

16 Van Dien 10.04 am

Rhys Witherspoon watched on the TV a live report from a camera crew outside E street in Arcadia University. “The fire is very much under control John and the cleaners who raised the alarm and evacuated are been treated for smoke inhalation but nothing more.”
“Do we know Roxy what started the fire?” the newsroom presenter, back at the ANN studio asked.
“No we do not John. It will be some hours before the fire has dampened down enough before police and fire investigators can begin to determine the cause of the fire.”
“Is there fire damage to neighbouring buildings Roxy, or is the Isis Club the only building damaged?”
“There is some minor damage to the buildings on either side, both separated by narrow lanes that led to car parking at the back for staff. One vehicle was in the parking area behind the club and has been extensively damaged by fire.”
“Ok Roxy…I gather this has caused quite a sensation at the university.”
“Yeah, it sure has…lots of students here looking on. I do wonder how many of them should be at class right now.” Roxy finishes with a bright smile.

Yeah right…one dumb blonde, but hot looking…probably why she was hired…and I am tired. Witherspoon yawned, exhaustion reminding him he needed to sleep. The Isis Club burned down…vampires don’t like fire, was it deliberately lit?
His cellphone beeped and cursing he answered. “See the report?”
Norrell. “Yes…I am going to sleep on it. If you want a comment…I am pleased the place has met such a fate.”
“Same here…Nicola too hopefully. I will be done here by tomorrow so see you then.”
“Right.” Witherspoon terminated the connection and switched off the TV. He was soon asleep.

E Street, Arcadia University: 10.15 am

“We go live in 40 seconds.” The camera man said. Roxy Electra nodded and checked her hair in the mirror, patting it back into the place.
“Hey Roxy!!!!” came a shout from the gathered students on the other side of the street. She looked around. “Over here babe.” One guy waved. Oh dear…another admirer. She sighed and waved back putting on her best smile. She had been the centre of attention since arriving 2 hours ago…and though I like attention…some of these young boys, looking rather nice…oh really to show it so in public. Others were waving and shouting to her too…but this young man caught her by surprise. “Saw you at the club babe…looking hot in black.”
“OH…you must be mistaken.” She stammered.
“We go in 20 seconds.”
“Ah sure Richard…be there in a moment.” She said. “You must have thought some one else looked like me.”
“You are OH SO unmistakable.” The student replied and a few around him cheered.
“10 seconds Roxy.”
“Ah…right.” She quickly positioned herself before the camera. “How do I look?”
“Great…3…2…1…go”

“Hello I am Roxy Electra, coming to you live from outside the Isis Club here on E Street at AU. About 2 hours ago, a fire broke out in the club that was discovered by cleaning staff who bravely raised the alarm as the fire rapidly took hold, engulfing the interior of the club so quickly, that an accelerant of some kind may well have been used. We have yet to receive confirmation of this, but has you can see behind me, the club has been well and truly gutted. The brave fire crews have fought valiantly to put the fire under control and now they are dowsing down the site so that investigators can begin to sift through the building for clues as to how the fire was caused. There were 5 cleaners working inside and they all evacuated with minor smoke inhalation injuries. I am hoping to speak with fire chief, Brad Winter, but he is presently unavailable…”
“We have reported on this club before Roxy…it has a reputation.” The studio presenter asked. “What is the feeling there among students. The club seemed to grow in popularity recently.”
Roxy nodded breathing in deeply. “It did seem to have a reputation John, especially under new management recently. There have been some complaints about the…rather raunchy and gothic reputation it began to gain and well, it seemed to attract large followings. Of course the notoriety took hold with the disappearances of 3 girls on 24th May and that investigation was still in progress yesterday with detectives here at the club.”
“Yes indeed Roxy. And is there any damage to other buildings Roxy?”
“Well John, on the left of the club is the Green Clover Inn and that has escaped much of the damage and on the right, the Red Bar has minor damage on the left side of the wall. A vehicle not belonging to any of the cleaning staff was found at the rear carpark behind the club. The plates are been checked with DMV as we speak.”
“Ok, Roxy we have to go. We will get back right after this break.”

113a: 1 June

E Street, Arcadia University: 10.18 am

Tanya Corrigan and Jacob Dennison were among the students watching the fire fighters dampen down the remains of the fire. The Isis Club, a two storey black building with two white marble statues out the front had been gutted from the inside, but the walls were still intact, the statues covered in ash and scarred black.
“Fancy that…Roxy herself at the club.” Jacob remarked, hearing what one of the guys had shouted near him.
“I have seen her there once.” Tanya said shivering.
“Sorry babe…I promised not to mention it…put my foot in it again.” Jacob said putting an arm around
“It’s alright…we are here to see an end to all this.” Tanya replied.
“Right on that babe.” Jacob said nodding. “By the way got a text message from Jen earlier this morning. Just saying hi, and looking forward to catching up when she gets back. They should be on there way by now.”
“We will have to meet up when she comes back. Perhaps a get together to mark the start of the new semester.”
“Great idea…I volunteer both of us to plan it.”
Tanya grinned. “Sounds good to me…make it a surprise party. We have to let her parents know though.”
“Sure…they won’t mind. It will be mainly just the group. Hmm…we can invite Gabriel, make it four.”

Nearby a man dressed in a stylish black suit, white business shirt and dark blue tie watched on among the onlookers. Every so often he spoke quietly into a concealed throat mike disguised as a pinhead sized flesh coloured patch on his right neck.

228 Clipper Dr: 10:22 am

Ryan paid for the pizza and thanked the delivery boy before closing the door and latching it securely. He descended down the stairs into the basement. On a table was a laptop open with a blank blue screen. Behind it was shelving in which were 3 plasma TV screens and two stand alone computers, keyboards and mouse beside the laptop. One of the TV screens was showing ANN live coverage from the Isis Club with Roxy Electra. The laptop was originally purchased to be used for graphic design but Ryan had found something quite out of the ordinary and since then the laptop remained on whatever programme that was running. Every so often typed conversation would appear…rather like a chat room but not like any social chat room as Ryan thought it was radio traffic transcribed to words on a site that he had not been able to track down. And the conversations was distinctly military or pseudo military in its procedure. The last conversation was 3 days ago about the Isis Club.
Ryan placed the pizza box on the table and opening it helped himself to a slice of Hawaiian pizza and French fries.

Cx7suddenly appeared on the screen. Ryan looked at the trigram and remembered it from the last time. I wonder if this programme is connected to another that is monitoring this traffic. The laptop was purchased at a computer shop at the North Beach Mall, the owner Dallas Foreman saying it was one of surplus stock from PDF, which had undergone considerable hardware cleansing before release.
Cx7: monitoring ANN. What is going on?
3np: Unknown. L4b is on site and initial report is an electrical fault. Evidence does not support this. A possible spike in the paradigm was detected and reported at 0840 hrs.
Cx7: Report was received 0842. Another spike was reported at 0849 in the vicinity of first spike. Tz5 is on site investigating both spikes. L4b is to remain and monitor. What about ident 33
3np: Unknown. Ident 33 was there last evening and believed to have remained the night. But no confirmation on this.
Cx7: “Therefore too late for any containment. Maintain observation.”

There was nothing more. Ryan printed the screen and returned to his pizza and French fries while re reading. Ident 33 was mentioned at the last conversation too, in reference to the Isis Club. “…spike in the paradigm…” What the hell was this? And there were two of them both in AU, given where the club was. Were these people PDF or were the PDF monitoring them.

114a: 1 June

1236 Buena Vista Boulevard: 11.05 am

“Ah…professor, Gabriel here. Look, I think Jennifer and her parents are heading for a vacation. They have been packing the car the past half hour.” Gabriel was parked on the other side of the boulevard watching the family at the professor’s request. He was surprised that Nicola could be targeting Jennifer. “So you think she survived the fire.”
“Yes, she has access to the expansive sewers and tunnels beneath the university.” The professor had replied.
Gabriel did not mind doing the favour. The professor had helped him out in the past and he had no plans over the semester break. A chance to return the favour.

“Really….oh…oh, yes.” The professor replied quickly. “I quite forgot. Malcolm mentioned it to me last week. He has a sister in Seaport. Hold on…” Gabriel heard rustling of papers and a thump…a book falling on the floor perhaps. The office was to say the last, organized chaos. “Here we go…got the details here…her name is Clarissa and she lives at 68 Lenicore Avenue, above an antiques shop she owns. Quite a nice place I have been there and brought a few things.”
“Ok…what do you want me to do, then?”
“Hmm…have you been to Seaport?”
“A couple of times…I did some work there during student semester over Christmas.”
“Hmm...what are your plans over the semester break?”
“If you want me to go there just say so.”
“So…ah…no plans then. Well…yes I do. I need you to keep an eye of Jennifer, but more importantly Gabriel, the immediate surroundings. If anyone is interested in her I need to know. Now you have not met her have you?””
“No. Just seen her around at uni but that is it.”
“Right and oh yes…be unobtrusive. I think you have an ability to do just that Gabriel.”
Gabriel nodded. “Yes…I will have to pack a few things, any idea where I could stay. Where is the shop located?”
“Just off the main square…Lenicore Avenue runs parallel to Main Square South.”
Gabriel thought for a moment. He knew the square quite well. “Right…a guest house would be best I think and there is one that I know.”
“Excellent Gabriel, keep in touch and thank you for doing this.”

Arcadia University: St Magdalene

The professor closed his cellphone and looked across at Witherspoon. “I hate using these things. A necessary evil I know. I would have asked you to go down, but you are busy this semester break with the team.”
Witherspoon nodded. “The game is this weekend and expecting a full house at the stadium. So, I gather then that the sleeper is going away. What did you tell Gabriel exactly?”
“That she was a possible target for Nicola.” The professor replied sipping his brandy. “No need to complicate matters further.”
“Oh…the Isis Club has been gutted by a fire…deliberately set and Nicola escapes, or we think she has.”
“Nicola escaped…but I think she will be lying low for a while.”
“Why is that?”
“Because whoever lit the fire was sending a message. She was becoming a liability…to open, flaunting her powers.”
“I never thought of it that way…you mean by her own kind.”
“Yes, I would say an elder would have directed this.”
“But I would have thought the Nomads were even more of a problem considering what they have done.”
“Quite so…but they have been labeled collectively by the media as a psychopathic murderer. Not vampires…and not a gang or group of people. But you are right, they might have been warned as well. I might get you to check the papers and internet news for any fires reported. You know this internet stuff more than I do.”
Witherspoon nodded. “I will check when I get back to the office.”
Professor McDowell took a deep sip of his brandy. “I think we are one step closer my friend.”
“What do you mean?”
“One step closer to the Slayer awakening. I think how it will happen will be in Seaport and the antiques shop could be the key.”

115a: 1 June

Seaport: 1.19 pm

It was a leisurely drive from New Providence to Seaport. Outside New Providence following the coastal highway work had begun on extending the mag-lev transit system from New Providence to Arnhem then onto Seaport. The transit system in New Providence was underground and at Mayden station a new platform and above ground track was been laid that would connect the 3 cities by 2100. Plans were for the link to follow the coastal highway and though some business and houses would have to be relocated, the need was there for it as more people were working at the ever increasing business and technology sectors at New Providence. Arnhem and Seaport over time had transitioned to the fisheries, textiles, agriculture, forestry and manufacturing industries, processing raw materials and processed goods from the hinterland and towns. Merchant vessels from BAMA and the Canadian Federation exported from both cities with newly developed port facilities.

Gabriel drove along the coastal highway to Arnhem then around the coast of Hutchin’s Bay passing the road that led to Chateau Montsegur, home of the House of Lorraine and through the fishing village of High Rock and then south towards Seaport. The day was bright and warm but the local radio station was forecasting a storm front coming in from the south to be here before nightfall. “Heavy gale force winds and rain is expected along the coast and Coastwatch has issued warnings to fishermen to return to port before nightfall. The weather is not good for the game this weekend, I always have said they should have put on a retractable roof when the redesign was been done…but oh no, we just could not have that. But hell…they did put in new drainage, so the field won’t be a slush pit. Anyway, that’s news, sports and weather, now its back to timeless hits…” Gabriel turned the radio down, passing a sign post marking 5 miles to Seaport.

There was always something about traveling outside New Providence, the sudden contrast between rural and urban. Gabriel had done a paper last year on resource management and learned that urban expansion was strictly regulated as was the use of land for farms, orchards, market gardens in relation to the natural environment and use of natural resources. The House of Lorraine enforced the regulations…usually at odds with the Hierarch who wanted nothing more than to profit however they could. It was that…that got Gabriel interested in learning politics, having seen a number of Representative meetings and seeing how the 10 families attempted to manipulate policy and law to their financial advantage. Sometimes they succeeded, other times they did not. Sitting in the gallery and watching as the public were permitted to, proved entertaining. Some called it comical and yes it was, but beneath all that, manipulation, “wheeling and dealing” as one movie put it and shifts and swings in power was evident, not only between the Hierarch and the other councilors but also between the Hierarch representatives themselves. If one was patient…if one was observant, one could see the shifting balances of power...it was a triangle of forces at work, the Hierarch, Council Representatives and the House of Lorraine.

Before leaving Gabriel had looked at the map of Seaport, finding the location of Le Beauchamp Guest House and booked a room. The guest house was located on Van Lessing Street, two blocks from Lenicore Avenue. A quick check of the business pages had given him the name of the antiques shop, the only one on the street, Memory Lane Antiques. Entering Seaport he drove through the suburbs hugging the coast and into the central retail and business district. Centered on Memorial Park, it was surrounded by 4 avenues each named Main Street, E, W, N or S. Lenicore Ave paralleled Main Street S, followed by Randall Street and Van Lessing Street where the guest house was located. Two blocks closer to the harbour were found the fish market opened between 5am-9am every weekday morning. Gabriel’s father drove to the market here 3 times per week, to purchase fresh fish, lobster and crab for his restaurant. Turning into Van Lessing St he passed a number of old styled cottages and stopped before a two guest colonial styled home. Jennifer and her family would be here soon, or perhaps they had already arrived…so I might as well settle in then have a wander around looking at the vicinity of Memory Lane for an observation post. This was not only about Jennifer but anyone who was interested in her…those responsible for the disappearances of 4 or more girls.

Arcadia Square, New Providence

Jenna Norrell left Arcadia Square and entered one of 3 underground tunnels that went under 5th Avenue to Cedar Park. Making her way through the brightly lit tunnel, of white marbled tiles, she became suddenly aware of being watched. She continued walking, her high heels clicking on the tiles…strange there was no one else coming through especially this time of day. She glanced for a moment to the left and right, seeking any grey shadows…any movement, but there was none. Then she saw two men climbing down the stairs that led up to the park, dressed in business suits. They passed her, conversing about some road works project and she climbed the steps quickly and entered the park…the feeling now gone. Looking back down the tunnel for a moment and seeing nothing, she turned and entered the park. That was strange indeed…but I felt what I felt, someone had been watching me.

116a: 1 June

Memory Lane Antiques Shop: 1.32 pm

Clarissa Morgan and her assistant opened the crate just delivered to the shop. “Oh…” Michelle Guerin, the assistant exclaimed. “This is from the property of Wilfred Gainsborough, our benefactor.”
Clarissa nodded sadly. “Yes, his passing caught us all by surprise…he was a lovely man and did a lot for this community. The last time I saw him a month ago, he told me of his cancer and that he had bequeathed some of his collection to Memory Lane, on the condition that it would be displayed but not for selling.”
“Well, let me sought through this and put in on the inventory. You have Malcolm and Deidre arriving soon.”
“Oh yes…thanks Michelle for reminding me. I will leave you too it.” Clarissa removed her gloves and climbed the stairs to her apt above the shop leaving Michelle to take out the items from the crate. There were 8 paintings, scenes of Rylinor House set atop the escarpment overlooking the bay. Each of the paintings were the same in relation to scenery, but the difference of each was the weather and timing. Two showed the house during a day scene, one cloudy and raining, the other a clear blue sky, two at dusk, both gloomy, dark and stormy, one with lighting coursing across the bay. The next two were of the house at night, both stormy, with lightning and rain, the house silhouetted by the lightning and the last two were of the dawn, one with fiery red clouds and sun rays almost seemingly burning on a parched landscape and the other, a cloudy dawn, a storm gathering in the background. Michelle had never been to Rylanor house, where Wilfred had lived for 80 odd years, but Clarissa often visited there to keep Wildfred company, both interested in history and antiques. The paintings were placed into special storage alcoves once she had written them into the register. What else, she mused peering into the crate.

There were 8 others wrapped objects. Opening them, three were 19” tall bronze statues of Egyptian deities, Horus, Set and Osiris and the base of these were adorned by small carved hieroglyphics that Michelle determined could only be read with the aid of a magnifying glass. Wilfred was into Egyptology and had lectured at the university until he retired 15 years ago. He was also the author of numerous books on ancient Egypt, the history of Egyptology and archaeological history of the region. Michelle remembered Clarissa mentioning that Wilfred was a freemason and Egyptian rites were used by them…which had intrigued her at the time. My own father is a freemason and has never said what went on the lodge. She entered the statues into the inventory and placed them in the large wall safe along with the paintings. The fourth package once opened was a glass case in which there were 3 tablets with cuneiform writing…Sumerian. Michelle had seen similar tablets at the New Providence museum, where the display was only part of the collection the museum had obtained many years ago. Once entered in the inventory she placed the case neatly into a shelf in the safe then looked back into the crate.

At the bottom was a large wrapped object surrounded by 3 others, neatly packed. Since the crate was hand lifted in by three men, Michelle guessed the large object was the heaviest and needed to be opened within the crate. So she unwrapped the 3 smaller packages. The first was a varnished wooden carving of a snake about 10” long. The snake’s eyes were small green gemstones. Once inventoried and stored the next package when unwrapped was another glass case in which were small bones and looking closely each bone had a rune inscribed. Scandinavian…Norse perhaps. Intrigued, she entered the item onto the inventory and stored it in the safe then opened the last of the smaller packages. It was a box of varnished cedar which Michelle measured as 8”length by 6”wide and 5” high, and all sides were ornately carved in what looked to be Celtic mosaics. But there was no key lock…no hinges but it was light enough to be a box and shaking it slightly, she heard something move inside it. Oh dear…I should not have done that…I hope I did not damage the contents. She added the box to the inventory and placed it in the safe. That left the large wrapped package about 3ft tall and taking up half of the crate. Michelle closed the safe and locked it then went upstairs to get Clarissa’s advice on what to do.

116a: 1 June

2 miles south of North Cove 5.34 pm

The phone rang and a delicate pale hand lifted the receiver. “Yes.”
“It is done…confirmation is been forwarded as I speak.”
“Excellent. Once I have received confirmation, the remainder of your payment will be forwarded. How soon will the accident be discovered.”
“Don’t worry…Officer Cushnie always passes down this road at 5.44pm on his way to the diner. He will see it.”
“Well done…I look forward to hearing the report.”

Brand switched off the cellphone and looked outside the car window. The sun was setting and the reddish light was suddenly bright for a moment. Rain lashed across the windscreen and the wind was beginning to build. A storm was due this evening. Across the road, a corner barrier had been smashed…before it skid marks. Beyond….the man smiled and lighting a cigarette. This will teach them to poke their noses in…where they shouldn’t. He drove away feeling rather satisfied at getting his employer’s excitement level rising again…he got such a big kick out of this sort of thing.

5.45pm
“Hello Roxanne, how are you beautiful…I will be there in a few minutes and tonight…I would like to try out your Shepherds Pie.”
“Oh, not the usual steak, eggs and fries, been seeing the doctor have we?” came the amusing bubbly reply.
Brent laughed cheerfully. “Eat healthier was his advice. Anyway see you soon and well…a side order of fries would not hurt.” Grinning he terminated the call. Damn sun…tends to darken earlier this time of year. He activated the tint on his windows, wipers clearing the falling rain from the window.

The rain had started falling an hour earlier and it was heavy and now wind was whipping through the trees and even it was ….. and it was then he saw the road barrier ahead. What is this….someone has driven through this. He slowed and pulled to the side. Stepping out he reached for his torch and first aid kit and hurried across. Tire tracks skidding to the side onto the verge and through the barrier. Reaching the edge he looked down and saw a car about 30ft down the ravine, impacted against two trees and surrounded by dense undergrowth. He called it in and went down gingerly, the rain hindering movement and visibility and he nearly slipped on two occasions, gasping gratefully as he was able to hold his footing. He was drenched by the time he reached the vehicle…god the rain is heavy. There was a hissing sound of boiling hot radiator water, bubbling over the engine…the bonnet crumpled against the tree. He peered through the window at the back and tired to open the door but it was seemingly jammed. The front window screen had been pierced and passenger windows smashed, the doors affected by the impact and misshapen. A branch had sheered through the by a branch, glass all over the bonnet and inside the driver’s and passenger’s seat…there was blood on both seats and on the glass fragments…but no people. Unusual…if people had survived the crash, the car doors would still be open, unless they had climbed out of the window. Looking down the side of the front door there was no blood and he moved around the passenger door and checked…but found no signs of blood on the door frame or on the ground below the door. The radio squawked that ambulance and another unit was on the way and he called in the latest…no people found, but evidence of blood. He then called out attempting to draw attention to anyone that my be nearby but nothing was heard. He noted the license plate and registration code on the back screen and called it in. This was going to be a long night…I had better put my dinner on standby.

117a: 1 June

6.40pm

Professor McDowell removed his glasses and leaning back rubbed his eyes and sipped his brandy. Marking papers…always a tedious task, but necessary. “You’ve got mail” the computer chimed pleasantly.
Looking at his inbox the originator was unknown to him and clicking the following text appeared.

“I do so wish to pass my condolences on the unfortunate demise of Rhys Witherspoon and Jenna Norrell. I cannot attend what arrangements may be made in the future. But I will be watching from afar. Do stay out of our affairs, Professor. We own the night.”

There was no signature. Breathing deeply the Professor reached for the phone and made a call…just what was going on?
